The Connection Between Anxiety and Depression

Many people are confused about the differences between anxiety and depression. They can be unsure what the real problem is. The following is an explanation of the differences between anxiety and depression:

Anxiety disorders.

Anxiety disorders generally feature fear and panic at times that do not call for these types of reactions. Sudden panic or anxiety attacks without any obvious triggers are common. However these can be managed with the right help.

Anxiety disorders carry many different symptoms. They can include self-protective behaviors, avoidance behaviors and fear of undetermined future events. The anxiety often interferes with daily activities and day-to-day life.

Panic attacks and anxiety can be so debilitating when they occur that often we try to avoid situations we know can bring them on. This can greatly impact how we live our life.

Generalized anxiety disorder is believed to be caused partly by a malfunction in our brain chemistry. It is possible to rewire the brain by changing your thought patterns to overcome anxiety.

People who are depressed don’t typically have the same uncertainty and fear that people with anxiety disorders have. Depression usually produces feelings of low self worth and hopeless and they have an overall low mood and a general loss of interest in daily activities.

Symptoms Of Depression:

  • Insomnia or getting up early in the morning
  • Changes in weight and appetite
  • Problems making decisions, remembering things, and concentration
  • Physical pains that have no physical reason for being there
  • Lack of energy
  • Loss of enjoyment in activities you used to enjoy
  • Feeling hopelessness or sadness
  • Feeling worthless

People get confused about the difference between anxiety and depression for several reasons. Generally, if the person is getting medication for anxiety they are usually given some kind of antidepressant.

These antidepressants are known as selective serotonin re uptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These are helpful for both depression and anxiety disorders.

The Connection Between Anxiety And Depression

Often times, depression and anxiety occur together. One study found that 85% of people who had major depressive disorder also had generalized anxiety disorder. From this, a further 35% of these people displayed symptoms of panic disorder.

The anxiety disorder known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often presents symptoms of depression as well.

The Perfect Storm

Suffering from anxiety along with depression is a bigger challenge than dealing with one or the other on their own. Don’t despair as there are many natural alternatives to help you overcome both.

  • When both occur at the same time, symptoms of both become heightened and much more severe
  • Depression can take longer to recover from, resulting in a more chronic version of depression that can be resistant to medical treatment.

Depression As A Reaction To Anxiety

It is a fact that depression is common in people with anxiety disorders.  This is due mainly to the fact that anxiety causes so many problems in daily life. Most patients who have this will discover that their depression goes away when their anxiety is under control. Therefore there is no need for treatment for the depression.

There are 2 situations in which the anxiety patient may need to have help with their depression.

  • The first is this. The person has become so depressed because of their anxiety that they lose the motivation to get over their anxiety. Cognitive behavioral methods or medications can be used to help deal with the depression in these situations.
  • The second is the case of a person who has a severe attack of depression prior to the anxiety disorder showing up.  This would be considered a primary depression and the person is more likely to need medications for this.

Getting Help

If you think that you have anxiety or depression, you should see a doctor or counselor. Doctors can give you advice as to how to treat these disorders and to prescribe any medications that can help you. Counselors can offer you alternative therapies and treatment to help you.

Maybe you might not be comfortable with seeing a doctor. If this is the case, then  a life coach can also help you with ways to get through it.
