Herbal Remedies for Treating Anxiety and Panic Attacks

Anxiety can affect our bodies in many ways and if not dealt with can cause us serious health issue. You subconscious mind controls the autonomic nervous system and you consciously have no control over it. It is divided into two parts that consist of the sympathetic and the parasympathetic systems. It responds to extreme physical and emotional stimulation which brings on a fight or flight response within you. This then increases the adrenaline produced so you can respond to danger. However most of the bodies reactions these days are to what we perceive as a danger that really isn’t. If this stimulation continues for a period of time it leads to an increased heart rate, irritability and sweating.

The parasympathetic system is suppressed in these perceived times of danger. It is responsible for our vital bodily functions that include breaking down the nutrients for use, digestion and eliminating waste. When this system is shut down for periods of time it can lead to serious digestive disorders.

No matter what has brought on your anxiety, whether it is work, family, money or health these herbal remedies and supplements can help you. Some will have effects immediately while others will begin to work over a period of time with continued use.

Quick and easy teas and supplements

A hot cup of chamomile tea will help to calm your nerves straight away. Some of the natural properties of chamomile can have the same effect on your brain as a Valium. Only natural.  Chamomile can also be taken as a supplement however this can take quite a few weeks to see results.

Green Tea

Green tea contains an amino acid called L-theanine which has been shown to reduce your blood pressure and your heart rate. It will help to calm your anxiety but also help you to focus. Drink as much as you like.

Lemon Balm

Lemon Balm has the same effects as green tea however it is recommended not to take too often as overuse can increase your anxiety. You can get lemon balm in a tea but also a supplement.

If you can find valerian in a supplement this is a great sedative to help you get a good nights sleep. The juice of the valerian root is considered very soothing. It smells a bit disgusting so you don’t really want it in a cup of tea. Not recommend if you are already taking a sedative.
